Pro Bono Network

Triage Cancer is seeking volunteer attorneys who are passionate about helping individuals that have been impacted by a cancer diagnosis deal with legal issues. Individuals contact our Legal & Financial Navigation Program with a wide variety of questions. Some of the topics we’re asked about include:

• Public benefits
• Real estate/landlord-tenant law

While our team is able to answer most of our callers’ questions, we do not provide legal representation and we don’t always have expertise in a particular subject or in a particular jurisdiction.

We partner with pro bono attorneys willing to accept referrals. Some callers need to speak with an attorney on a limited basis (e.g., one or two half-hour consultation(s)) and others need full representation. The referral process is as follows: (1) Triage Cancer provides free legal navigation services to callers, (2) if we determine the caller would benefit from speaking with an attorney, we would reach out to members of our Pro Bono Network to gauge capacity/interest; (3) if agreed, we would connect the caller with the pro bono attorney.

Volunteer Responsibilities

• Willingness to accept, and respond to, emails from Triage Cancer attorneys who have identified a volunteer as a possible referral for a caller (based on the volunteer’s subject-matter expertise and location)
• If a volunteer accepts a referral, after an introductory email from Triage Cancer, they will arrange a virtual meeting with the caller and provide a free, one-half hour consultation. Following that initial meeting, they will provide guidance, advice, and/or representation as agreed to directly with the caller.
